Hamilton County, Ohio Children's Records: Six Orphan Asylums, 1829-1919 (PRINT)
Authored by Jeffrey G. Herbert
Published 2024, 434 pp.
This index contains the names of over 17,700 children who entered the six major orphan asylums located in Hamilton County, Ohio between October 1829, and December 1919. Of those children who entered, only a small portion were total orphans (i.e. both parents were dead). Most were subsequently returned to their families, or upon reaching the age of 14 years old, were placed in an apprenticeship to learn a trade or skill. Valuable family information was recorded when the children entered the asylums, which makes this an excellent resource for family history researchers, as well as those researching social conditions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The information recorded for the children entering the asylums varies by institution and period. This index records the name of the child, date of admission, birth date or age at admission, names of parents (if listed), date of dismissal, and where they went after dismissal. There is usually more information available for the child and their family in the original records. The references in the index will lead researchers to these original documents and the repositories where the records are located.
The six orphan asylums covered in this index are: Cincinnati Orphan Asylum, St. Peter Female Orphan Asylum, St. Aloysius Orphan Asylum, German General Protestant Orphan Asylum, St. Joseph Orphan Asylum, and New Orphan Asylum for Colored Children.

Hamilton County, Ohio Children's Records: The Children's Home, 1864-1919 (PRINT)
Price: $50.00; Member Price: $40.00
Authored by Jeffrey G. Herbert
Published 2023, Paperback, 561 pp.
This index contains the names of over 45,800 children who entered the Children’s Home of Cincinnati, Ohio between April 1864, and December 1919. Of those children who entered, only a small portion (~11%) were surrendered and placed in foster homes or adopted. Most were subsequently returned to their families. A great deal of family information was recorded when the children entered the home, which makes this a valuable source for family history researchers, as well as those researching social conditions in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries.
For those children that were surrendered, subsequent documents record where the child was placed, and what happened to them in their new homes, sometimes for up to 20 years until they reached adulthood. If the child was legally adopted and given a new name, these are indexed by both their birth name and adopted name to make it easier for the researcher to correlate. The publication is available as a softbound book and is also as a PDF searchable file for download.

Price: $37.50; Member Price: $30.00
Authored by Jeffrey G. Herbert and Julie M. Ross
Published 2022, Paperback, 396 pp.
Economic opportunity in America and escape from poverty, social upheaval, and political chaos drew immigrants from many countries of Europe. The Great Famine, lack of opportunity for Catholic tenants, and poverty drew Irish immigrants. Knowing the Irish county and town or the region of Italy for a Hamilton County ancestor can be a breakthrough for a family researcher.
This index contains the names of over 13,400 individuals who emigrated from Ireland and Italy to Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Ohio, and were referenced in various records between 1865 and 1930. The source material for this work includes newspaper death notices, cemetery records, church baptism, marriage and burial records, and published histories of Hamilton County, Ohio.
The publication contains the name of the immigrant, the date of the record and page number to lead the researcher to the original source record, their age, and the indicated place of birth. In the case where a woman’s maiden name is recorded, it has been extracted and these names are sorted in a separate index for easy cross-reference.

Index of Death Notices Appearing in Der Christliche Apologete, 1839-1899
Price: $48.75; Member Price: $39.00
Complied by Jeffrey G. Herbert. Published 2016. Paperback; 604 pages; 8.5 x 11. This index has over 26,800 deaths, which were reported and published before 1899 throughout the United States, with the majority of them from the Midwest area. The newspaper was begun in 1839 by Rev. Wilhelm Nast in Cincinnati. As his influence spread, he recruited many more ministers to support the German Methodist movement, and the founding of many more local churches in the area, which eventually expanded to include most of the United States and Europe. The death notices contained in this index therefore include people that lived in all parts of the United States in the 19th and early 20th century, and also include approximately 85% of the towns of birth in the death notice. This makes the index of benefit to researchers throughout the United States looking for the place of birth of their German ancestors, as well as researchers in Germany trying to find what happened to relatives that left the area and settled in the United States in the 19th century.
