Forgive me if this is a very basic question, but were there any particular ports of arrival which were common for Germans emigrating to Cincinnati in the nineteenth century?

Andrew -- I spoke with Kenny Burck yesterday about your question.  While Germans arrived at virtually all ports over time, the most used were New York, Baltimore, and New Orleans.  From about 1830 to about 1870 Baltimore and New Orleans were the predominnant ports of entry, and then after that New York City.

Andrew asked a great question! Your answer proved useful because I found a possible lead.  I'm looking for my German ancester who married in Cincinnati in 1857. A record shows someone with a similar name who arrived in New Orleans in 1854. My ancester may have travelled via steamboat to St. Louis then Cincinnati working as a ship's carpenter.  Has anyone else had success finding steamboat records from this time period from St Louis to Cincinnati?
